How to find out which stream you should Choose?

‘There is huge scope in Science’- says my elder sister.

‘I will take commerce’ –says my best friend.

‘Choose engineering’- says my parents.

‘Arrghh! I will just focus on my board exams now and will think about choosing stream later’- I told to myself.

Above mentioned statements are often heard from a student of class X. This stage is quite transitional and students go through it every day. Undoubtedly, choosing stream after class X is a prodigious task and demands a lot of time to think. A hasty-nasty decision can result into a regret of lifetime. It has been observed that students quit mid-way through the course and fail miserably if they pick a wrong stream. Hence, it is advised not to give in any kind of pressures. Ask yourself few questions and answer honestly to take a thoughtful decision. It will surely help you to sail you in the right direction.

What’re you interested in?

Just remember that unlike school & college education which lasts around 15-16 years, working life lasts more than 20 years. So, it is necessary that you have clear idea of what you want to pursue.

The career you choose should be interesting to you. It shouldn’t be something that will be dreary to you through the entire working period. Analyze yourself, your interests and set your priorities. If you are tech-savvy, love inventions in technical field, choose Science. If you love Economy, choose Commerce. However, if writing or drawing is the most powerful weapon for you, choose Arts. 

What’s your favourite subject?

Choosing stream in class XI depends on your favourite subject. If you choose the stream that has your favourite subjects, you’ll never get irked of the studies. Thus, if you are fond of Economics and Literature more than Chemistry & Physics, don’t choose Science. On contrary, if you love spending time in solving Science or Mathematics problems, choose Science. 

  

What’s you aim?

A satisfactory job that earns living and brings happiness is the ultimate aim of everyone’s life. So, you have to decide what you want to become- an advocate, a doctor, an engineer, an artist, a scientist, a journalist or a writer. There are various career options other than engineer or doctor. If you have a role model, be it your parent or sibling, talk to them and try to understand what are the requirements & demands of their career. If your role model is a celebrity, you can figure out about their career on the internet.  

If you’re able to find the answers to aforementioned three questions, you are already there to choose the stream. You can consult some career counsellor when in doubt but don’t choose a stream because of parental pressure or peer pressure. It’s you who has to score well and pursue career in chosen stream, so don’t let others to decide it for you.
